After 4 days of intense fight, representing Singapore Tan Jia Cheng 6d ranked 6th out of 66 players!!! (whao, lots of 6)

The top 10 countries from 1st position to 1oth position are China, South Korea, Hongkong, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Luxembourg, France, Czechia and Canada

Tan Jia Cheng 6dan is currently in Japan competing for the 30th World Amateur Go Championship!

When i heard about that news just now, I was shocked.

I could not believe what i had heard.

Is just so sudden.

To be honest i feel very lost now.

Hope u guys can give some suggestion or spot any "loophoes" in this new system.


Reasons for the new system

1. The new system help both low and high dan players to remain competitive and maintain their weiqi standard. If you notice high dan players seldom play against each other unless it is for overseas selection or in competition. Most of these players does not attend SWA class anymore and they only play online when they feel like playing. If we want them to maintain their standard or even improve, they should play more often with the top players in Singapore more often.

2. The new system gives a reason for current players to remain in weiqi. I used to think of ways to attract new people into weiqi but i realize i have neglected those currently player. Many currently players have stop playing because they do not have a reason to play anymore, for example if i am studying i have a reason to play because i am playing for the school, playing for cca point but if i have stop studying and going into the work force i will not have much reason to play this game because the value of this game somehow drop.

3. Being recognized. It is not easy to become a dan player. So many people gave up on weiqi before getting their 1dan. For example out of 100 people who learn weiqi, how many will eventually become 1d? maybe below 5 people?? I feel that SWA have not really make these "dan players" feel proud and important. This system help the weiqi community people recognized them and this system will also push kyu player to improve to be dan players. The result for this system can be put in our newsletter to update everyone of the top players progress.

4. This system have the incentive and reasons for currently weiqi players to work hard and improve and more importantly have a reason to stay on in this game.

Below are the brief ideas of the new " NATIONAL TEAM SYSTEM"

There will be 4 groups in this system, Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D.

The number of people in per group are as follow:

Group A-> 6 males
Group B-> 6 males
Group C-> 6 males and 4 female
Group D-> 6 males and 4 female

To select people for the first batch, the following ranking are used:

Group A-> 4dan, 5dan, 6dan
Group B-> 3dan
Group C-> 2dan
Group D-> 1dan

The games will be played within their groups, meaning Group A will play with people in Group A, Group D will play with people in group D etc..

-All groups will be played in round robin league. So everyone in each group will get to play against each other
-At the end of 1 league, the top 2 player of group D, Group C and Group B will be promoted to the next higher group for example top 2 player of Group C will move to Group B.
-The bottom 2 player of Group A, Group B and Group C will be demoted to 1 lower group for example the bottom 2 player of Group A goes to Group B
-The bottom 2 player of Group D will be out of this National Team System.
- In group D and C, the females will play against the male but the result of female will be separated from male. Meaning even if the last female in Group C is not in the last place of the whole Group C, she will still be demoted. For females only 1 female will be promoted and 1 female be demoted. However for a female to be promoted to Group B, she must be in top 2 position of Group C.

Selection to enter National Team System is 4 times a year. These players must be dan players or recommended by teachers.

Benefits of entering National Team System (applicable to players who survived in this system for 3 or more league)

-Overseas or Major Competition Selections are open to National Team System players only. Public will not be able to join selection like in current situation. (Ppl not in the national team can appeal to join selection if they have reason for example strong player just came back from overseas, strong player busy in workforce no time to be in national team, ns....etc...)
-All internal competition are free
-Able to join weekend class for free (suggesting..)
-Team Singapore Weiqi jacket?? (suggesting..)

The games will be played once a week and SWA will arrange the opponent for each player. They must play in either bishan or bugis any day of the week.

Just attended my primary school gathering. Seriously i could not recognize some of them at all and i even ask them do i know you? muhahaha.. Is really good to see them after 10 years. Omg... time really flies...

Playing in tygem really is a test of my endurance for not giving up weiqi. I have been losing till i am sick of it. Yls has been giving me alot of advice and suggestion but i just cant seems to "implement" them cause is just not my playing style.

Playing restaurant city in facebook these few days. Is really a good game to waste time especially when i am working... haha..

I was reading this news article about this young gal aged 2 years old with the IQ of 150++ and she became the youngest member of "mensa" in england.

I am quit interested in IQ stuff so i went to google this MENSA association and realize that there is a MENSA SINGAPORE. Well... not everyone can join this association. You must pass their "IQ" test to qualify enrollment. So is actually an association for the smart people.

Coming sat is our youth gathering in bugis 2pm. Do spread around!!

Few weeks time some of my army friend in my unit will ORD loh... Haha... i will have my chance to say ORD loh next year or 4 years later.

Ok, going to write a lump of emo stuff....

So these bunch of frends who r leaving us soon are busy going into interviews in all the uni and trying their best to get a place in uni. Looking at them cant stop me from thinking whether going to uni is because u really like tat course or is for the sake of getting into a uni? The normal path of singaporean is pri sch, sec sch, poly/jc/ite/private, NS for guys, uni, get a job, get married and maybe waiting to die ba. Is such a fixed "routine" tat i feel abit sick of it.

I have seen so many ppl work not because they love their work but due to the salary needed to support them and their family. I cant imagine working in an environment for the sake of money while i have no interest in that job. Of course not everyone is lucky or fortunate to choose a job that they enjoy or like. If there are 2 jobs, 1 with damm high pay but u have no interest in that work while another job has average pay but is a job u enjoy doing it, which one will you choose?

I remember clearly that i have though through alot on whether i should study baduk as a degree in korea because this path fill with uncertainty and no one have done this. I have seek advice from many ppl especially those in SWA and i received different feedback. Some say i am nuts, some think is bad for my future, some thinks is a very good path and so on. Despite how blur the future seems to be if i take up this path, i feel that doing something i really like as my lifetime job is more important than any other factor.

When i said i wanted to study in korea after my ns, my mum gave me the "u siao bo" face and i think my dad was shaking his head, deep in his mind thinking i have walk fire enter demon(zou huo ru mo). But soon i somehow managed to convinced them which i cant remember how and they agree to it. I am really glad i have their support. As you know older generation can spread stuff really fast, one of my uncle get to know this and he wanted to talk to me about it. I wasnt really keen about it cause he is kind of strict and i was expecting him to scold me or something near there. But he told me that i should work hard towards my dream because not everyone get a chance to do what they like as a job in this world. Haha, this really surprise me...

anyway i dunno why i write all this stuff but yea who cares, haha...

went to watch THE INTERNATIONAL with zhixiong, wenjun and xingwei and there is weiqi in the show!!! haha... Our reaction when we see the weiqi scence must be really funny... Maybe this is the scence tat WAKE up all of us... haha... Without this scence i think i would be whack till upside down by them cause the show isnt good...

Went to watch handsome suit with my army friends today.

This show is not my cup of tea. Fell asleep so many times and i have never fell asleep in any show before. booo......

Anyway this sat, 18 april will be our youth gathering in bugis clubhouse. As usual the starting time is 1pm. Spread around!

Sat morning is also my korean class with monkey sis and wenjun and last week homework was pretty tough...





The 3 of us realise that learning korean through vulgarities is the fastest way to master this language. Everytime when the teacher wan us to say a sentence in korean or she talk to us in korean we will be like staring at each other and go HUH???? But when it come to stuff like saying "you wan to die?" "you look like a pig" "shit/urine""you wan me to beat you up?", OMG, you should see how fast our reaction is.... you will think we have korean blood in us...

Anyway our teacher's son is a weiqi player too and they went japan for some exchange program so i ask her to help me get a blank fan. But when she is back, she told me that the blank fan has no more stock so she ask the ppl there who is the most famous player cause she is planning to buy tat person's fan for me.... guess wat..... this guy is tat famous person.....



OMG.... of all the pro player, she got me the one i am least interested in.... haha... james must be so into this fan....

Ing cup is over and is one experience i didnt regert taking a week off from army.

Too many photos so i wont be posting them up.

Sent lee chang ho to airport on sunday and realise he lost a jacket on the day he came singapore. And he seems to either practice yoga or meditation cause he forget to bring his floor mat back to korea.

Anyway 1 reason why i prefer korea weiqi more than other country is not because korea is the strongest weiqi country but their method to attract youth.

Was so surprise to see newpaper advertising or rather putting up a notice informing tat bishan is holding dan upgrading competition.

It is mention at the last page which is the sports corner.

Even though is small but is really good to see weiqi stuff there.

Went to watch Valkyrie which is based on a true story (vo-ke-ri i think so, haha) with my army friends today. I think is a nice show cause i like this kind of movie. But some of my friends fall asleep cause not much action... much of a story based movie...

Everytime i watch this kind of movie i cant help to think that i am really fortunate to be born in non-war period. Looking at how hard life can be and how cruel your enemy can be in war time is really upsetting.

Was doing last min shopping with my mum last week and we came across this japanese snack store selling this cookie....

I have to admit i am abit strange. I dun really like the fruit banana but i like the banana flavour so i got really attracted to this cookie....

Hajin help me got 朴永训's signature last dec when cindy was in korea training. Hajin told me that i was really lucky because she wanted to give up helping me get his signature cause he din went to the dojang till the last day cindy was leaving korea...haha. The korean word below his signature is daniel in korean...

Sat in bishan was the first SWA CNY CUP. Is a brand new format of "formal" competition held in swa and it went off pretty smooth.

Went it comes to swa event, food is always involved....haha

a bit messy but who cares as long as there is food...

Competition area.... notice that the players in a team are seated in a straight line. Each team is consist of 5 players. Meaning 10 players will be playing on a single board. 30 sec per person.

Yls's team....(3rd) 1 win to kls team and 2 lost (junjie, zz, minyi, xiong hwai)

Zhou xiang's team (champion) 3 win and 1 lost to Kls team (yurika, small boy from 少年队, karen and zhi xiong）

Kls's team(4th) 1 win and 2 lost (xing wei, yao tang. wen jun and jia xuan)

Hls's team (2nd) 2 win and 1 lost to zx's team (alvin, jia cheng, jie hui, fei yang)

After every game the players will auto review game. The game between yls and hls team....

Kls reviewing and explaining their game to his own team...

Kls feedback that he thinks that this competition is very fun cause everyone in a team work together and he really enjoy this competition. Is good to get good feedback especially from the teachers.

But there are areas to improve to for example the players are limited cause cant have too many player in a team, the strength of player cannot have too much difference.. So maybe we can have a kyu category the next time. Hope to make this a yearly event.
